How much alcohol consumption is OK during Pregnancy? The evidence that any during pregnancy causes damage to the child seems to fluffy and unclear. Women were prescribed 1 Pint of Stout/Guinness per day up until 5 years ago and it never did them any harm. Many Doctors in Europe still recommend a small glass of Wine if a pregnant woman is 'on edge'. I am very aware that heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy is known to be damaging to the unborn child so is a silly idea. however, Im interested in other people's point of view as the evidence is so mixed.

Alcohol is bad during pregnancy but I did read somewhere that a glass of wine is ok every once in awhile.

I would say zero. If I have to look at statistics, that appear to be "fluffy and unclear", I just wouldn't fool with it.

There is no strong evidence, that's why they recommend none - because while they cannot prove that a little can harm, they can't prove that it doesn't.
It's very easy to say that ,'it never did them any harm', but when you look at the increasing rates of birth defects, asthma, allergies, cancers etc etc, something is harming them somewhere, we just haven't been able to pinpoint what.
Better safe than sorry - drink nothing in the knowledge that it won't harm rather than drink a little in the hope that it won't.

I don't think a glass of wine or beer every once in awhile (like maybe once every 1 to 2 months) is harmful at all, but that's just my opinion. And you're right, the evidence has been skewed and not very convincing due to all of the different reports. However, there is no recommended "safe" amount of alcohol to consume during pregnancy...it's always a better idea to just abstain from any type of drug or alcohol. But as I said, it's my opinion that small amounts in extreme moderation are not harmful.
-EDIT- And I really hate it when these questions are asked because all of the super moms (or so they think) show up in force and try to make it sound like the person asking or anyone who doesn't think you're the devil for having a glass of wine are all horrible mothers and who are "risking" the lives of their children. *rolleyes* We can't all be PERFECT like you ladies, but I think some of you should take a step back, think about some of the less than healthy things you've done during your pregnancies and stop judging others.

NONE. I would not even go back to some quack doctor who told me it was okay to drink alcohol while carrying a child. There are no conclusive studies that even small amounts of alcohol are okay. FAS is no joke, and you shouldn't tempt fate. Nine months is not a long time to avoid alcohol when you know that it will ensure the safety of your unborn child.
