How can you tell if you are an alcoholic?I am 22 and just out of college. I have gotten into the habit of drinking on nights that I hang out with friends and have nothing planned the next day. I have noticed though that this is happening more and more bc we are more free with our time and honestly we all get bored!! How do you know if you are an alcoholic?
By the way don't just say if you drink all the time bc I know alcoholics can be the people that can't go a night without a drink but still work all day.

If you drink by yourself or hide drinking to make it look like you drink less, if you can't afford to pay for drinking, if you've gotten in trouble with the law because of drinking, if it interferes with your life in any way, if it negatively impacts your relationships with anyone, if you can't do anything that is your responsibility to the best of your capability because of drinking, if you feel like you need to drink to be happy, if you feel sick when you don't drink, if you black out, if you can't remember things, if you do dangerous actions while drunk, if someone tells you you drink too much.

If you can drink a warm flat beer in the morning and not think it tastes nasty, you are an alchoholic. If you put irish whisky in your coffee you are an alchoholic. If you pass out, wake up and keep drinking to try to avoid getting a hangover, your an alcholic. If you are concerned enough about it to ask on a site like this, you are not an alcoholic.
Take it easy on the drinking anyway. I like to drink sometimes too, but not on a regular basis.

Because I drink all the time?
Basically, alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol. If you think about getting drunk a lot, if you think you need alcohol, if you want to drink to get drunk and obsess about it then you could be an alcoholic.
It's hard to tell in this day and age, I mean it's not so hard for me to tell, I know myself, but young people these days binge drink. Most young people go out at the weekend to get drunk so it's hard to distinguish between "normal weekend binge drinker" and "alcoholic". I suppose knowing when to say "I've had enough" could be the difference between an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic.
Another thing to look for is an addictive personality, if you have an addictive personality you can get addicted to just about anything.
Basically, the person knows if they have a problem with alcohol, it just depends if they want to admit it and/or acknowledge it or not.

One key way of knowing if you have a dependency to alcohol is if you cannot go without it. If you need to have a drink every night and are not able to function otherwise, you may have a problem.

Some good information on this site. You also have to consider binge drinking, which many college students do, then continue after graduation. It is the consistency of the drinking that matters....the social aspects you describe. Try something...continue to go out with your friends, and don't drink. See if you can do this for at least a month....if you can't then yes, you have a problem. And yes, the consistency and amount with continue to increase over time as your tolerance will increase. The fact you ask a question tells me you already know something is wrong. Try findings things to do that don't involve drinking. You are establishing habits that are going to be hard to break....be careful!
