tested for diabetes, how many carbs, sugar, sugar alcohol a day can I have? What is the testrange for an adultI was told to eat fruit, then I was told fruit is full of sugar. I was told to watch carb intake, not so much sugar intake. I have not been back to doctor's yet, so this is info from diabetics(?). I know I have to start exercising, that is a given, but I don't know what I can and can't eat. I don't know how many carbs I can eat a day, I don't know how many grams of sugar I am to have per day, or sugar alcohol per day? I am not even sure I have this disease, I will find out in 2 months. My readings are between 110 and 130, the average is 118 so far. Can someone help me with the answers, besides the obvious, eat right and exercise. Thank you........

Well this will be covered in depth by your physician on your next visit. Normal is 80-120 and fasting is 65-95. 2 hours post meal is less than 120. The diabetic diet is very complicated and we sometimes have a hard time informing them of what to do and eat. You will need carbs but you just need to regulate them closely. Sometimes for a quick boost when hypoglycemic you will need to eat some high sugar foods but generally you will need to stay on a healthy low glycemic index diet which is high in fruits and vegies but low in starches like white bread, candy, simple sugars and potatoes. If you are just insulin resistant you can cure your diebetes by loosing weight. If you don't loose weight you will probably die with sores on your numb feet and in renal failure. Sorry for the scare but enough of my collegues are not telling people this. Living with diabetes is harder than living healthy. Go to a nursing home and ask how many of these people are diabetic type II.

I think where they would like to see the level is around 114 ~ 120 if pregnant ~
Look on the internet for diabetes association ~ some great tools, menus ~ etc ~ do some homework to better take care of you ~ for fruits, most eat the size of their fist , what fits on the inside of the fist ~ small orange ~ 1/2 apple ~

Fruit like every thing eat in moderation.... I've been diabetic for 3 years I try to eat at breakfast no more than 30 carbs total at breakfast lunch about 40 and no more than 60 at dinner. It helps to write things and how much you eat in a food diary. If you need a snack make it no more than 15.
For example if you like white rice that can shoot up blood sugar so swich to brown. If have to have sugar have splenda its a great substitute You can eat about anything you wont but remember what may bring my blood sugar up may not affect you. A great thing that works for some diabetics is chromium and cinnimon extract that can help lower blood sugars. I try to stay away from sugar alchols b/c of nasty affects.
