How Does Alcohol Affect Your Hormones?

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Hormones?According to Cancer Research UK alcohol "increases the risk of breast cancer by increasing the levels of hormones such as oestrogen in the body."
My doctor suspects I have a hormone imbalance, can anyone tell me if this could be caused by alcohol and if the increased levels of hormones alcohol causes could also affect you emotionally/mentally as I suffer from terrible mood swings and depression. Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.

Every person is affected differently by alcohol. Females have less body water than males. With less water, alcohol reaches a girl's organs faster than a guy's. Other factors that affect how fast you process alcohol are your weight, how much you've eaten, and how fast you drink. Your hormones also affect alcohol absorption. During the month, your hormones go up and down, which changes how much alcohol stays in your blood.

Remember that you don't have to slur words or stumble around to be impaired or intoxicated (drunk). Once you have been impaired or intoxicated, the only thing that will sober you up is time. Coffee, cold showers, exercise, or other things you've heard about will not speed up your body's rate of getting rid of alcohol from your system.

Yes Alcohol does affect your hormones. For women the levels of testosterone rise whilst you are getting drunk. That is why some women get more horny and some can get violent.

Any change in your hormones will take time to adjust back to normality, it doesn't just happen.

With regards to what your Dr is talking about, there are lots of things that can affect your moods & depression. It might be wise to lay off the alcohol for a long period (I know it can be tough) to give yourself a chance.

Other things like progesterone levels, PCOS & huges changes in hormone levels can also affect your moods.

It may also be likely that you have a particular issue that needs to be addressed. See if you can be referred to a counsellor.
