breast pump question and a question about breastfeeding and alcohol?

breast pump question and a question about breastfeeding and alcohol?Im looking at buying a medela swing breastpump. Has anyone used one and are they any better than just a plain medela electric breastpump?

Second question. if i consume alcohol while breastfeeding (feeding baby expressed milk of course) do i have to pump the milk out to get rid of the alcohol or will it just go away by itself over a period of time?

Answer by dreamgirl4myboy
I read once alcohol is out of ur system its out of ur milk... they say it takes two hours I don't risk it I just pump after two hour. Medela is a great pump but there are less expensive ones that work just as well

I'm not too sure about the pump but...you should wait 24 hours and pump to get the polluted milk out. you can breat feed the following day

the medela brand is great regardless of what type you get. an electric pump is much more efficient than a manual, in my opinion anyways, and if you're planning on just using the pump sparingly then the swing is a great option (since it's a single pump versus a double). if you're planning on using it while you go back to work or if you're going to be away from your baby for long periods of time, I'd recommend getting a double just because it'll cut your pumping time in half.

if you consume alcohol you do not have to pump and dump unless it's to relieve engorgement. alcohol leaves the breast milk as it leaves your blood, so if you feel sober you should be fine to breast feed. if you do go out and drink a lot and do not feel comfortable nursing, you should make sure you pump on schedule so that you do not get engorged. if you're sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to breast feed -- less than 2% of alcohol reaches your breast milk and 1 or 2 drinks will not be a problem.

just wait approx. 2-3 hours and you will be ok. you don't have to pump or express any milk. if you have anymore questions, and you live in the US, go to the nearest WIC office. or google WIC to get the web address to find the nearest one to you.

If you drink, don't nurse right away. its not the equivalent of being rubbed with a alcohol pad, totally different types of alcohol. check this website out http://www.babycenter.com/0_alcohol-and-nursing-moms_3547.bc

I can't answer about the breast pump (I have an Ameda Purely Yours electric pump and it's the best!) but I can answer you in regards to alcohol. It takes around 2 hours per standard drink to leave your system. Have a read of this: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/ABA_Alchohol_BF.pdf
