If alcoholism is such a disease, what about people in jail?

If alcoholism is such a disease, what about people in jail?If people claim alcoholism is such a disease, which I believe it isn't, it's just a lack of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, then who do people argue that these so-called disease sufferers need treatment? It's a choice, put the drink down, you have free will.

If someone committed a crime, let's say a DUI and they go to prison FOR 5 YEARS, but they had this so-called alcoholism disease, then while they are in prison they have no access to alcohol. PROBLEM SOLVED. Being in prison w/o access to alcohol will force them to get over it because they have no way of drinking.

What about if they went to prison for life? Their alcohol problem is solved for a lifetime.

Free will doesnt work the same way when there is an addiction involved. Sure there are some people who can say I won't drink and they dont but the majority of people who are alcoholics can't just stop drinking.

It is a disease.

Answer by MatterOfFact
Actually, alcohol withdrawal is pretty much the only withdrawal that can actually kill you.

Any alcoholics being imprisoned will require medical treatment.

And a lot of addicts end up going back to it once they get out. It's like being fat. You can go on a strict diet and lose all the weight, but if you don't get over what's messed up in your head, you're just going to gain it all back again.

It is not that easy. There are millions of people out there in AA - that would love for it to be that easy. To just walk away from an addiction does not work for most people.

It is personal responsibility, like most of societies issues. A choice, not a disease.

Funny how near all doctors and psychologist would disagree with you. Prison doesn't solve addiction, it's a life long struggle. Christ look up the word addiction in the dictionary. Alcoholism itself isn't a disease, it's a disease because it's an addiction. IF YOU CAN PUT THE DRINK DOWN YOU'RE NOT AN ALCOHOLIC

As someone else said, alcoholism is actually one of the worst to break for those physically addicted, the DT's can literally kill you.

*edit*
Have you ever once in your life actually talked to a former alcoholic? How about you go try it, find one that hasn't had a drink in 10 or 20 years then ask them if they ever think about drinking anymore and get back to us on that. Guarantee you the answer is going to be "Almost every day"
