why does alcohol make people gain weight, besides the calories?is it because their diet changes (ie, cravings, overeating).? seems like it's more than just the calories. if they kept the calories the same, replacing some of the food calories with alcohol calories? like 2000 cal (no alcohol) and 2000 cals that includes the calories in the alcohol.

Mostly the calories. Almost 100 calories per drink, minus any mixers and carbs present in beer. That can add up to 1,000 calories in one night really easily. Plus, people tend to eat greasy food when drunk.
No one replaces food calories with alcohol. They just add the alcohol.

theres also often a high level of sugars and carbs wehich can create even more calories. I think people forget that the calorie content can go beyound the label.

Actually very few calories from alcohol are stored as fat, barely any. It works negatively by reducing the amount of fat your body burns for energy. On top of that it increases hunger levels so people eat more.
Those two negatives combined arent good !
Its generally not a good idea....unless on a rare ccassion.

Alcohol converts into sugars which are simple carbs and if you are the body type whose liver converts glucose into fat cells easily then you will gain weight as well as containing yeast which ferments in your digestive system causing swelling which is a beer belly as well as diminishing probiotic activity which is responsible for digestion and nutritional absorbtion
Answer by Andrew
Many people complain about the "beer belly", but one can not truly get fat solely based on alcohol consumption. The main reason people gain weight as they drink alcohol products is because they indulge in unhealthy snack foods that the bars offer.
