Hmmm well I would be more concerned with the personality changes by mixing the two. I won't go into detail but the one time I took my xanax and HOURS later drank, well let's just say I now have a felony record and am divorced. I really wouldn't.

Speaking from personal experience, I would wait at least six or seven hours. Mixing Xanax and alcohol doesn't necessarily put you to sleep, but it will get you seriously fucked up (aka drunker than you have ever been before).

As long as you wait a few hours from the time that you take your xanax you should be fine. You shouldnn't die unless you binge drink. The two won't mix very well at this point. Your main side affect would be drowsiness. I want to give you my opinion but I won't out of respect of your wishes.

Why don't you take smaller quantities all along the day - A
1 mg Xanax will give you a 8 hour effect - a strong one - then....
Seems to me that 0.25 in the morning - 0.25 at 12.00 - 0.25 at 5.00 pm are more harmonious - and by the way 0.25 less all in all - if you drink after you took a one 0.25 xanax, of course the effects will not be that strong -
because Xanax acts as a potentializer of your drink - and among the nasty effects, the risk of loss of conscience, and the loss of control of your car if you have to drive -

If you're insomniac Xanax is not the answer - speak about all this with your doctor - not with us
