Drinking alcohol while breastfeeding?

Drinking alcohol while breastfeeding?I want to drink a little more than a few drinks, but im planning on pumping and having milk available for my child before i drink. But, How long does it stay in my system after i drink? When can i start breast feeding again?

Answer by NZ mother
it depends on your weight for me its 2 hours for every drink i have from the time i have my first drink.

The alcohol in your milk is the same as what it is in your blood. If you feel tipsy (or more) than you shouldn't breastfeed, but there's no need to pump and dump. Once you are sober you can safely resume breastfeeding. It depends on how quickly your body metabolizes alcohol but it will likely take several hours or maybe overnight depending on how many cocktails you have. Enjoy!

no need to pump and dump unless you want to keep your supply up. if you are feeling the alcohol your child will also. you should wait until the next day to nurse if you are drinking in the evening.

The general rule of thumb is 2-3 hours per drink. People always say that you'll need to "pump & dump" but that isn't true. The only reason you would need to "pump & dump" is to relieve the pressure and prevent engorgement. Once the appropriate amount of time has passed, you can just start feeding, it isn't like the alcohol will stay in your breasts.

Your breast milk gets filtered by your body while drinking the same way as your blood. So if you're drunk and your blood alcohol content is high your breast milk will be high too. So make sure you have enough stored breast milk to replace a few feeds. and pump when your would normally be breastfeeding to keep your supply up.
