How can I tell if I am an alcoholic? My wife jokes sometimes about me being an alcoholic. I will admit that I drink a lot. However I don't get drunk every time I drink. I don't drink everyday, I have never missed work because of a hangover (in fact I don't drink at all if I have to work the next day) and I have never had a DUI. I do however drink alone either in bars or at home, and I do drink about 4 days a week. I know recovering alcoholics would say "if you drink your an alcoholic". That is not the answer I am looking for. I am looking to find out what actions define an "alcoholic?

when you can not normally function, alone or with a group, without being under the influence of alcohol, when it affects your daily routine/life.

i would say you're an alcoholic if you crave it very badly and cannot stand to not drink it during these cravings, or if you can't quit if you want to. try to go two weeks without a single drink.
if the thought of that shocks you, you need to slow down.
if not, try it. posting this means you're obviously worried.

Maybe you're an alcholic if:
1.) After work you go down to the bar to have a mere 3 beers. But if you get there early you say you might as well have an extra one.
2.) Your son or daughter has gotten hurt after you got home from a party or a night drinking.
3.) You have had 2 or more DUI's.
4.) You can't remember the last time you had a soda or water instead of a beer at a restaurant.
5.) You have five or more different types of beer in the fridge at all times, and you refill the fridge every few weeks.
6.) You have called in sick to work multiple times because of a hangover.
7.) People laugh at you and say you have done some crazy things. When you have no idea what they are talking about.
8.) Someone has told you multiple times to cut down on the alcohol consumption, and you tell them "I can stop whenever I want".
9.) You say you drink because you are "bored".
10.) You opened up this article thinking "Hmm lets see If I am an alcoholic, like all my friends think I am".
Hope this helps!!!!

Do you need alcohol to feel normal rather than drunk?
Do you ever miss work or appointments because of alcohol?
Have you ever lost a job due to alcohol?
Do you ever hide alcohol around the house?
Do you constantly think about having a drink if you do not have one in your hand?
Do you go through withdrawals if you stop drinking for a few days (generally flu-like symptoms)? If so, your body is chemically dependant on alcohol.
If you answer yes to any of the above, you may want to seek professional help for alcoholism - it is a dangerous disease that will kill you if you don't treat it.
I will often have a scotch if I am home alone; there is a difference between having a drink to unwind or to enjoy the flavour and drinking because you need to. There is acceptable drinking and unacceptable drinking - the above scenarios constitute unacceptable drinking that may indicate alcoholism.
