How does Alcohol Poisoning cause brain damage?I'm a health conscious type of guy (except when I drink.) Last Halloween I went to Fantasy Fest (Mardi gras in Florida) for the weekend and I had way, way too much to drink. So much so that I got alcohol poisoning and had to be rushed to the hospital. (I will never overdo it again.)
I read one of the side effects of alcohol poisoning is permanent brain damage.
Should I be concerned by this or am I being a hypochondriac?

Can't say if you are a hypochondriac.
Alcohol (Ethyl alcohol) is a fuc**ng POISON. What kind of moron doesn't know this?!
Our body (most of us) has the ability to excrete an enzyme to safely metabolize alcohol. (Alcohol will be fermented in our guts if we eat fruit, for example). As you increase your alcohol consumption, day by day, the enzyme level will increase. But it is not something that turns off and on. It takes time. That is why someone who drinks a lot (and often) will not feel the same as some one who never drinks after the same amount of alcohol. (Of course, body mass, last meal, fatigue, and mood all also affect inebriation)
Anyway. Every drink you take kills brain cells. In your case this might not be considered "damage". For people who use their brains it would be. Fortunately, we have a lot of brain power so that the damage is slow to appear (its there we just cant measure it until it gets to a certain level). It also damages the liver - if you know what that is...
Anyway, for the enzyme to work the alcohol has to be present. If the alcohol is present it is likely killing (brain) cells. Until the enzyme gets all of the alcohol "neutralized" (which takes time) its acting as a poison in your body.
Next thing you'll ask about is whether spicy hot foods damage cells or if heroin is "good" for you. *sigh*

THe biggest fact that very few people dont realize is that Alchohol absorbs water. It takes away water from our living cells. Our cells then become dehydrated which eventually leads to severe damage.
