Why is it those in the government see smoking as detrimental to society and alcohol abuse laws go practically?untouch? Could it be that raising the prices on alcohol products to the levels they have smoking products HURT all these legislators who themselves are "alcoholics?" I for one am tired of the government using smokers as scapegoats for every little whim they can think of in Washington. How about you?

Do those in government see smoking as detrimental to society? I doubt it, the revenue they raise from taxing cigarettes is substantial.

I think they would have made smoking illegal long ago if it did not bring in so much tax dollars.

You're right. It's easier for teenagers to drink and drive (but potentially more deadly) than it is for them to get cigarettes .

When I started smoking, it was $ 7.00/carton. Where I live, it's now $ 70.00. I wouldn't even so much mind if the money were actually going where it was supposed to. "Education", which I have since come to learn means benefits for the union members. Wait until the stupid pot smokers get their wish and have it legalized. They don't know what they're asking for!! It'll be $ 350 an oz. by the time Uncle Obama and Co. get through with it.

DUI offenses are up in the stratosphere now. More people are busted for mere suspicion of drinking. If there is a magazine in your car with a beer ad in it, you're busted for THINKING about drinking while driving. Cops watch bars to catch people leaving them in cars. Even with all those additional laws, additional enforcement. additional prosecution, fines, Driver Responsiblity fees, and so on, drunk driving is still on the rise.

In one state, it's described as being illegal to drive within an arm's reach of alcohol. Presumably this includes the passenger's blood level as nothing in the law specifically excludes it.

The premise of your question is flawed. Actually, the Anti-Smokers and the Anti-Drinkers have been equally vociferous in the government for over a hundred years. It's only at this moment that tobacco users have rolled over and made themselves more of a ready target that the predators are pouncing on them like wolves.

Already government policies of higher taxes to reduce tobacco use has been so successful that they're now screaming about the drop in tobacco tax revenues. Won't be long before they go to another victim to recover the lost revenue.
