Are there any harmful effects to huffing ethyl or isopropyl alcohol?

Are there any harmful effects to huffing ethyl or isopropyl alcohol? My younger brother always carries a bottle of hand sanitizer (ethyl alcohol) in his pocket. I thought this was because he is a clean freak, but he has taken to sniffing it. He will just unscrew the top and take a deep breath, and he has no qualms about doing it right in front of me. He does the same thing with big bottles of rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol.

He does not drink, nor does he huff any other substances or use other drugs of any sort. He says he does not think he can get high doing this, and that that is not his intention... he just likes the smell.

I don't know if it's harmful or not, but at the very least it's making him look like an idiot, and at the most I'm a bit concerned for his health. He has been having more and more nosebleeds and sinus pain lately, though he attributes these to allergies (which he does have quite badly).

He's 18, and says I should just leave him alone because he's old enough to make his own decisions. I'm 20 and I say he's old enough to know better than to huff stuff whether it's actually harmful or not.

Is huffing ethyl and isopropyl alcohol harmful?

Answer by Arthur K
"If inhaled, isopropyl alcohol may cause irritation to the throat, mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, and lungs. High concentrations in air may be narcotic and depress the central nervous system with symptoms including headache, breathing difficulty, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of coordination, weakness, nausea, and vomiting."
