What are the effects of alcohol on the teen brain?I'm 16 years old. I started drinking about 9 months ago, lightly, about once a month on average. Within this last month of summer I've been getting drunk about 3 nights a week. My mother's side of the family is FULL of alcoholics. I wanted to know what the long-term effects of drinking could be on my brain. Should I give up drinking completely until I'm 21? Or just cut back? Thanks for any answers.

It makes them 10 feet tall and bulletproof, with a genius IQ and the ability to fly. In short, they become the most interesting man alive.
You don't have to cut back on your consumption, start building up your immunity now. The sooner you kill this liver, the sooner you can get a new one.
You may want to stay away from the mixed drinks though. Things like orange juice, coca cola, or red bull have too many calories in them, they're not good for you.

Alcohol's effects on teenagers are basically the same as they are for someone in their 20's, 40's, or even 80's. MADD really likes to quote a study done on rats to say it kills young people's brain cells, although of drinking among humans found no correlation between moderate drinking during teenage years and brain damage. However, you said your mom's side of the family has a lot of alcoholics. Alcoholism, as you may know, runs in families, and something you chose to do for fun can turn into something your body needs. Nothing magical's going to happen on your 21st birthday; the family history will still be there. I'd say the safest thing to do for someone with genetic risk would be to not drink, but since that's a little too much, I'd say don't have more than two or three drinks at any one time.

For your own sake quit at least until you're 21 not only is it illegal for you to drink at 16 but drinking at such an early age often causes permanent mental & physical problems
Look at how alcohol affects those alcoholics on your mom's side of the family: Do you want to become like them? I don't think so.

too much drinking isn't good for anyone, no matter age or size........ no one on here can really tell you what you should do, you gotta do what you feel right. I use to drink(lightly) i never got drunk or anything like that before. but i could feel myself wanted to drink more, and more and more until i realized that it was all i could think about. On my mom side there had been alcoholics and i knew i didn't want to become one, so i just stopped, all together. i may have took a few sip of something here and there, but not the way i did before. I think if you think you can hold off on it till you 21 then you should because that is the better choice. Hope this helps
