Yes...it's dangerous (up to75% alc ) but was never illegal in Britain.
If it's been changed to a safe drink it's not the same drink!
The impressionist artist Degas painted someone drinking it, clearly drank by those seeking escape..... but it was popular with Bohemian society too. http://jssgallery.org/other_artists/Degas/Absinthe_Drinker.htm
More on it here..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe
You've put an idea in my head for a painting of my own...we shall see!

Wow, people really don't know shit about Absinthe
1. It is legal to possess, just not sell. You have to import it from Czechoslovakia to buy it, you can find it on the internet.

2. NO, It is NOT Hallucinogenic. Like any drug worth its salt it has had stupid people say dumb things about it. Absinthe is regular alcohol with the herb wormwood added. What wormwood does is block the alcohol effect to a very specific part of your brain. Basically you still "feel" drunk, which is fun, but you can think much clearer, which may or may not be fun depending on what you're looking for.
3. No, but I've heard anecdotal reports and I'm a biochemist.
