What causes people not to feel the cognitive effects of alcohol? Before you answer, I'm not talking about building up a tolerance from drinking often. Nor am I talking about occasionally not enjoying drinking as much as usual. I mean, several years ago, I ceased to be able to feel intoxicated. I used to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine once in a while, and now they just make me uncoordinated and clumsy. In other words, I still get the unpleasant physical effects, but not the cognitive effects of relaxation, giddiness, et cetera. Someone suggested food allergies, but I'm not convinced.
I'm sure this isn't tolerance; I was never a problem drinker. And I don't think it's anything to do with the way I 'feel' about drinking, though some people will suggest that. Even Yahoo Answers at first wanted to place this question in Social Science-Psychology before I re-routed it to 'Health-Other.'
Any ideas? Thanks.

It sounds like as you have matured (physically) your body's makeup has changed too. When I was younger I used to be a sad drunk or over the top happy drunk. As I've matured, I usually end up sleepy and uncoordinated and not very emotional (more than usual). I think it just comes with growing up.
